NO TURNING BACK

Despite the state of the world, they laughed until they cried. Tears kept falling long after the smiles faded. They talked into the early hours of the morning. It felt right to hold on to these tales. Especially in the face of so much loss. This is worth living for. Samantha wanted to bookmark this moment, to stay by the fire sharing stories about Aoife for as long as possible. The sound drew others to them. They approached warily, worried that nothing good could ever happen again to cause such laughter.

“Come,” Sarah said. “This is a far better honour for those we’ve lost. We tried tears, and that didn’t help. A few smiles won’t hurt.”

Samantha felt robbed of this family. Stories involving Ciarán did nothing to deflate her unease towards the man. The innocence of the boy on display in pictures on the walls did not make it into the man.

The fire was ravenous. Samantha watched how quickly the stockpile of moss-covered logs and turf dwindled. Its warm presence was a necessary comfort. Their food supplies were plentiful out of necessity, but they were not inexhaustible. We have to at least try for the cargo ship.

Samantha slipped away from the conversation. She lay down on the couch in the kitchen, covered her face in her hands and cried herself to sleep.
